Overview

Windows 10 comes in multiple editions, each tailored for different users and organisations. This comparison covers the five main editions: Home (consumers), Pro (small business/power users), Pro for Workstations (high‑end hardware), Education (academic – free for students), and Enterprise (large organisations with volume licensing). While all share the same core Windows NT kernel, security updates, and application compatibility, they differ dramatically in hardware scalability, security features (BitLocker, Credential Guard, AppLocker), management tools (Group Policy, Intune, DirectAccess), virtualisation (Hyper‑V, Windows Sandbox), and specialised capabilities (ReFS, Persistent Memory, LTSC, Take a Test). Use this guide to understand exactly what you get – and what you pay for – before upgrading or deploying Windows 10.

How It Works

Windows 10 editions are determined by a digital product key (or embedded licence). The OS contains all code for every edition; the key simply unlocks a subset of features. Here’s how the edition decision affects your daily use:
1

1. Installation Media

The same Windows 10 ISO or USB drive can install any edition. During setup, you enter a product key for the edition you purchased (Home, Pro, etc.). If you skip key entry, Windows installs Home by default.

2

2. Feature Unlock at Boot

After activation, the Feature Configuration Store enables edition‑specific capabilities. For example, Pro allows inbound Remote Desktop connections; Home does not. The kernel and core OS are identical – only the feature policy changes.

3

3. In‑Place Upgrade

You can upgrade from Home → Pro → Workstation (or Education/Enterprise with appropriate licences) by entering a new key in Settings. No reinstall is needed. Downgrades require a clean install.
