Overview
How It Works
OBS treats a recording or stream as a live composite of independent sources, arranged into scenes you can switch between instantly.
Sources
Each input — a display, a specific window, a webcam, a static image, a browser overlay — is added as an independent source with its own position, size, and filters.
Scenes
Sources are grouped into named scenes (e.g. "Gameplay," "Starting Soon," "Webcam Only"), switchable instantly via hotkey or on-screen click during a live recording or stream.
Audio mixer
Every audio source — microphone, desktop audio, a specific application — gets its own channel with independent gain, noise suppression, and a noise gate, mixed in real time.
Encoding
The composited output is compressed by either the CPU (x264, highest quality per bitrate, more CPU-intensive) or a GPU's dedicated hardware encoder (NVENC on NVIDIA, AMF on AMD, Quick Sync on Intel), which offloads the work so gaming and recording don't compete for the same CPU cycles.
Output
The encoded result is either written to a local video file, sent to a streaming platform over RTMP/SRT, or both simultaneously.
