Overview
How It Works
Maya's workflow moves from building 3D geometry through to a final rendered frame, with animation and simulation layered in between.
Modeling
Characters, props, and environments are built using polygon and NURBS modeling tools, the foundation every other stage builds on.
Rigging
A skeleton is built and bound to the model's surface (skinning), then connected through systems like HumanIK so animation can be retargeted between characters of different proportions.
Animation
Keyframe animation, motion capture import, and nonlinear animation sequencing bring the rigged model to life, with a graph editor for fine-tuning the interpolation between keyframes.
Simulation (Bifrost)
Physically accurate effects — fire, smoke, liquids, destruction — are generated procedurally rather than hand-animated, using Maya's node-based Bifrost simulation system.
Rendering
The integrated Arnold renderer produces the final frames, with real-time viewport preview of lighting and material changes via LookdevX and OptiX denoising to clean up noise without a full re-render.
